What Is 3D Printing? A Beginner's Guide

Have you ever wondered how a simple idea can become a real object you can hold in your hands? That's the magic of 3D printing. At Little Joy 3D Co, we use 3D printing to turn creative ideas into fun, useful, and personalized products — one layer at a time.

The Basics

What Is 3D Printing?

3D printing is a manufacturing process that creates a physical object from a digital 3D model.

Unlike traditional manufacturing methods that may cut material away from a larger piece, 3D printing builds an object by adding material layer by layer. This is why 3D printing is also known as additive manufacturing.

The process allows us to create shapes, lettering, designs, and personalized products that would be difficult or expensive to produce using many traditional manufacturing methods.

The Process

How Does a 3D Printer Work?

Most of the products we create are made using a type of 3D printing commonly known as FDM, or Fused Deposition Modeling.

The process begins with a digital 3D model. That model is prepared using special software that divides the object into hundreds or sometimes thousands of thin layers. Filament is then fed into the 3D printer and heated until it can be precisely deposited through a nozzle.

The printer follows the instructions from the digital model, placing material in the correct locations one layer at a time. Layer by layer, the object begins to take shape.

Depending on the size, detail, colors, and complexity of a product, a 3D print can take anywhere from a short period of time to many hours to complete.

Material Science

What Is 3D Printing Filament?

Filament is the material used by many 3D printers to create objects. It normally comes wound onto a spool and is available in many different materials, colors, and finishes.

Different filament materials have different properties, which means the best material depends on what the finished product needs to do. Some popular 3D printing materials include:

PLA

Polylactic Acid

Produces great-looking prints and is available in an enormous variety of colors. An excellent choice for decorative products, signs, toys, gifts, accessories, and personalized items.

PETG

Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol

Offers good durability, layer adhesion, chemical resistance, and water resistance. A great choice when a product needs properties different from standard PLA.

ABS

Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene

Known for its durability and increased heat resistance compared with PLA. Often used for more demanding or functional applications.

TPU

Thermoplastic Polyurethane

A flexible 3D printing material with rubber-like characteristics. TPU can bend and flex, making it useful for products that need flexibility or impact resistance.

And that's only the beginning. Because products start as digital designs, they can often be customized before they're printed.

Personalized 3D Printed Products

Personalization is where 3D printing becomes especially fun. Instead of every product having to look exactly the same, a digital design can often be modified with a person's name, colors, wording, theme, or other details before it is printed.

That makes 3D printing perfect for personalized gifts. A teacher's classroom sign can be customized with the teacher's name and colors. A backpack tag can be personalized for a child. A gift can be created specifically for a friend, family member, coworker, or teacher.

It turns an ordinary product into something made specifically for that person.

Good To Know

How Long Does 3D Printing Take?

This is one of the most common questions about 3D printing, and there isn't one answer because every print is different. Print time depends on factors such as:

Size
Height
Level of detail
Layer height
Number of colors
Material
Strength requirements
Internal structure
Printer settings

Unlike mass-produced products that may be manufactured by the thousands, many 3D printed products are individually produced. That's part of what makes them special.

Understanding Your Print

Layer Lines, Strength, Infill & Color

Why Do 3D Printed Products Have Lines?

Those are called layer lines. Because FDM 3D printers build objects one layer at a time, some evidence of those individual layers may remain visible. Layer lines are a normal characteristic of this type of 3D printing and part of the unique appearance of a 3D printed item.

Are 3D Printed Products Strong?

They can be, but strength depends on more than material — wall thickness, number of walls, internal structure, print orientation, layer adhesion, design, and intended use all matter. Good 3D printing selects the appropriate design, material, and settings for the application.

What Is Infill?

A 3D printed object doesn't need to be completely solid inside. The printer can create an internal structure known as infill. Different infill patterns and percentages can be selected depending on the product, allowing efficient use of material while still producing durable products.

How Does Multicolor 3D Printing Work?

Modern 3D printers can create products using multiple filament colors. Instead of painting colors onto the finished object, different colored materials become part of the actual print — making colorful signs, lettering, characters, and personalized gifts possible.

Our Story

Why We Love 3D Printing

For us, 3D printing is about much more than running a machine. It combines creativity, technology, design, problem solving, and imagination. An idea can begin as something on a computer screen and eventually become something you can actually hold.

That's one of the reasons we started Little Joy 3D Co. We're a father-and-son team who genuinely enjoy 3D printing and creating things together. Along the way, we're learning about creativity, responsibility, business, problem solving, and what goes into turning an idea into a finished product.

Our goal is simple: Creating Joy With Every Print.
